Il nome deriva dalla storica e potente famiglia dei Gazi o Gazo, poiché la porta è ubicata nella zona anticamente detta dei Gazi.
Essa doveva esistere già nel 1253 perché viene menzionata in un lascito di quell'anno.
E' certa anche la sua denominazione se si considera che i Gazi o Gazzi dimoravano a Ravenna già nell' 824, in un palazzo ubicato nella zona dell'attuale Duomo, nel luogo quindi ove sorge la medesima porta.
Nel 1750 fu ristrutturata per volontà di Monsignor Ferdinando Guiccioli; nel 1798 venne poi murata e da allora perdette la sua funzione di punto nevralgico, essendo destinata a deposito di polveri da sparo fino all'inizio del '900.
Le vecchie costruzioni attorno ad essa vennero totalmente distrutte durante l'ultima guerra; solo la porta rimase miracolosamente in piedi.
Porta Gaza is now in the city center.
The name derives from the historical and powerful Gazi or Gazo family, since the gate is located in the area formerly known as the Gazi.
It must have existed already in 1253 because it is mentioned in a legacy of that year.
Its denomination is also certain if we consider that the Gazi or Gazzi resided in Ravenna already in 824, in a building located in the area of the current Duomo, in the place where the same door rises.
In 1750 it was restored by Monsignor Ferdinando Guiccioli; in 1798 it was then walled up and since then lost its function as a nerve center, being destined to store gunpowder until the early 1900s.
The old buildings around it were totally destroyed during the last war; only the door miraculously stood.
