Furono i greci della città di Focea, assediata dai Persiani, che si insediarono alla foce del fiume Alento e a fondare la colonia di Elea, di cui questo parco archeologico ne testimonia l'importanza. In questi luoghi nacque una scuola medico -; scientifico - filosofica il cui massimo esponente fu Parmenide. Il parco archeologico è costituito da numerose strutture e varie aree di notevole interesse. Una perla dell'archeologia italiana.
