Pieve romanica di San Pietro

If you pass by Volpedo do not forget to visit this truly beautiful Romanesque church.

Ancient parish church dating back to the early Middle Ages, it was named for the first time in a document dated 965. Inside it preserves several paintings of considerable interest (especially in the apsidal part) dating back to the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. It is assumed that some frescoes were made by the Boxilio brothers of Castelnuovo Scrivia, owners of the most important workshop in the Tortona area. Highly recommended for lovers of churches.

Ancient Roman parish church founded in the tenth century on a pre-existing baptismal church probably from the fifth or sixth century, full of frescoes inside, remains the protagonist and witness of the history of the centuries to follow on the places of Volpedo.

WONDERFUL!!! a few meters from the studio of the painter Pellizza, on the edge of the historic center of this splendid village, is this Romanesque church, dating back to the 900 but remodeled around the fifteenth century. the external structure is very graceful but the best of itself is given inside, where the frescoes painted between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century are visible, both in the apse and on the pillars of the central nave. they depict saints, the symbols of the 4 evangelists, the Madonna and Child - now positioned on a small pillar at the bottom of the right aisle -, King David and a Christ in almond. in the left aisle the ancient altar was placed, from which angels and cherubs, never found again, were stolen. one sheet explains the architecture of the church, while two others tell the story of the altar and the fresco with the Madonna. finally, two somewhat too technical panels explain how the restoration of the frescoes took place. it's really beautiful, a little gem !! the visit takes about 15 minutes. I think it is open until the end of September on Saturdays and Sundays afternoons from 3 to 7 pm. in autumn I don't know what times you observe. I highly recommend it together with a visit to the town of Volpedo which is truly spectacular. close to the most significant churches and palaces there are brief explanations and you can also see copies of Pellizza's paintings around the alleys and squares, which allow you to compare how the town was in its time and how it looks today, in some cases really unchanged !!! the visit to the village takes about an hour. there are also two small museums to visit: the aforementioned studio of the painter where until 30 September you can see 4 canvases which will then return to their museums, as well as about forty sketches and paintings normally present, and the interactive museum where you can see less than a dozen preparatory cartoons for The fourth state, 10 didactic panels on Pellizza's painting and a 15-minute video on his most famous painting. however, this museum is not very interesting.

The Pieve di San Pietro is the main historical monument of Volpedo. Built in Romanesque style around the 10th century, it was remodeled in the 15th century. The interior has three naves, divided by rows of four quadrangular pillars that support pointed or round arches and the roof is trussed. Beautiful frescoes, some even valuable, and the basin occupied by the figure of Christ surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists with the figure of the Virgin on one side and that of St. Michael the Archangel on the other. At the bottom of the right aisle there is a Madonna and Child, a fragment of a fresco from the same period. The visit is beautiful and interesting. It is open only from 15.00 to 17.00.

The first documented trace of the parish church is a parchment from 965.
