È la storica piazza del Mercato fin dalle origini della Città, la piazza del commercio; ne parlano i cronisti aquilano di tutte le epoche! È uno degli storici luoghi di ritrovo della comunità aquilana, un punto di riferimento per cittadini e turisti; su di essa si affacciano attività commerciali di vario tipo che stanno riaprendo mentre si completa la ricostruzione dei Palazzi attorno alla Piazza! Sempre su di essa si affaccia la meravigliosa chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio (comunemente nota come «Chiesa delle Anime Sante»), ricostruita dopo i danni provocati dal sisma del 2009 e riaperta al culto nel dicembre del 2018. Due splendide fontane otto-novecentesche sorgono nello stesso posto delle sue fontane più antiche; le attuali fontane, ornate con statue bronzee di Nicola D'Antino (XX secolo) definiscono i due fuochi di un'ipotetica ellisse inscrivibile nel rettangolo della Piazza. Chiamata Piazza Maggiore, o Piazza Grande o ancora più propriamente Piazza del Mercato, da dopo l'Unità d'Italia è ufficialmente denominata Piazza del Duomo per via della Cattedrale che vi siete a «piè di piazza»! Ma per la comunità aquilana è anche semplicemente «la Piazza» per antonomàsia. Molto altro si potrebbe dire su questo stupendo scenario cittadino ma il consiglio è di recarvisi di persona per apprezzarne appieno tutta la sua bellezza e le sue suggestioni di luce e architetture in ogni orario del giorno e della notte, e in ogni stagione dell'anno! Per le sue dimensioni è frequentemente sede di importanti e grandi raduni e/o manifestazioni, eventi civili e religiosi! Visitatela! :-) Superb and large square in the heart of the Eagle Town!
