Dopo la fine di tale figura, nel 1326, il palazzo fu utilizzato per il Massaro ducale e successivamente pure per la Zecca. In seguito fu restaurato più volte, sia perchè divenne dimora della Duchessa Bianca Maria Visconti Sforza, sposa di Francesco I d'Este sia perchè divenne pure la residenza del marchese Sigismondo d'Este, luogotenente della città. Causa abbandono e i pochi mezzi del comune per ristrutturarlo fu poi affittato ai fratelli Balburelli degli Scaruffi che lo trasformarono in una osteria.
