La tradizione narra che la sua origine sia dovuta all'apparizione della Madonna ad una bambina che da un podere vicino era salita a Chiusdino per chiedere l'elemosina: la Madonna le avrebbe fatto trovare pane, farina e formaggio nella madia. Sul luogo dell'apparizione venne costruita una primitiva cappella nominata la - Santa Maria del Bosco. L'oratorio fu danneggiato, durante la Guerra di Siena, nel 1555. La tradizione narra che gli operai che stavano lavorando al ripristino dell'edificio, avrebbero udito una voce che intimava loro: "Fermi, qui c'è Maria!", quindi sull'intonaco sarebbe apparsa un'immagine della Madonna col Bambino dipinta a monocromo e sanguinante perché offesa da alcuni colpi di martello. A seguito di ciò fu costruito un nuovo santuario, sotto la direzione di Ansano Guiducci e grazie alla munificenza della nobile famiglia Fracassi, che fu terminato nel 1615. The first oratory in place was built around the fifteenth century. Tradition has it that its origin is due to the apparition of the Madonna to a little girl who had gone up to Chiusdino to ask for alms from a nearby farm: the Madonna would have made her find bread, flour and cheese in the sideboard. A primitive chapel named the - Santa Maria del Bosco was built on the site of the apparition. The oratory was damaged during the Siena War in 1555. Tradition has it that the workers who were working on the restoration of the building would have heard a voice saying to them: "Stop, here is Maria!", Then an image of the Madonna and Child painted in monochrome would appear on the plaster and bleeding because offended by some hammer blows. Following this, a new sanctuary was built, under the direction of Ansano Guiducci and thanks to the munificence of the noble Fracassi family, which was finished in 1615.
