Paolo fuori le mura Il sepolcreto si è sviluppato tra il I secolo a. C. e il IV secolo d. C. e presenta strutture pertinenti i riti dell'incinerazione e il successivo passaggio a quello dell'inumazione. Ecco allora le tipiche forme del colombario con le sue piccole nicchie (da cui il nome di questa tipologia di sepoltura), dell'arcosolio, del sarcofago. Il sito permette di avere un'idea della decorazione originaria con affreschi a semplici fasce di colore o con figure di animali di pregevole fattura. Confronti diretti si possono istituire con strutture più articolate, ad esempio con il colombario di Pomponius Hylas presso il Parco degli Scipioni, con la necropoli dell'isola Sacra, con la Triclia presso la catacomba di S. Sebastiano. Gli scavi sono meravigliosi ed ancora parziali perché lo scavo è ancora in corso; l’area è completamente recintata e quindi anche se l’intero scavo è visibile ma non è visitabile all’interno e la locandina descrittiva posta all’esterno dello scavo non è di facile leggibilità soprattutto perché mal tenuta. Come per tanti altri luoghi archeologici della nostra città ci si chiede sempre perché la sporcizia e degrado facciano sempre la parte del leone.. Purtroppo è difficile immaginarsi come dovesse essere questa zona durante il periodo Romano. Anche con l'aiuto della guida si possono solo immaginare le dimensioni di questa necropoli nata sulla direttrice più importante fra Roma e Ostia. Comunque vale la pena visitarla in modo da capire l'evoluzione dalla zona nel corso dei secoli. The visit to this site can only be done through the 060608, as indicated in another review. M	Marco Salvalaggio on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Necropoli di San Paolo è quello che rimane di una grande necropoli che, come costume dei Romani, sorgeva lungo una via consolare, in questo caso la via Ostiense. Era noto che qui sorgesse un luogo di sepolture, la più famosa delle quali era quella di San Paolo sopra la quale fu costruita la Basilica a lui dedicata, al di là di questo però le notizie erano molto scarse. Alcune tombe erano venute alla luce nel '700, altre a metà dell'800 e molte ancora tra il 1897 e il 1898, la documentazione è purtroppo molto lacunosa perché all'epoca non si è proceduto a uno studio sistematico e molte informazioni sono andate perdute. Solo nel 1917 con i lavori di ampliamento della via Ostiense e il ritrovamento di un'altra area sepolcrale si è iniziato a preservare il sito e a sottoporlo a seria indagine archeologica. La maggior parte della necropoli è tuttora sepolta e tutta da scoprire, non se ne conosce per certo nemmeno l'estensione. Il sito, che dall'esterno appare come una tensostruttura moderna e passa pressoché inosservato, è ancora sottoposto a studio archeologico e antropologico; team di studio da tutto il mondo stanno analizzando i molti resti umani per estrarre informazioni sulla vita nell'antichità. Per questo non è pienamente musealizzato, non ci sono percorsi per visitatori, ed è visitabile solo dall'alto lungo il perimetro di transenne per evitare pericoli di cadute. I sepolcri risalgono a epoche che vanno dal I secolo a.C. al III d.C. e sono di vario genere, perlopiù colombari per urne cinerarie ma anche sepolture a inumazione. Pochi sono gli affreschi e gli arredi visibili, poche anche le lapidi ma una in bella mostra sul lato di via Ostiense racconta un matrimonio longevo e riuscito: T-SEXTIVS M[...] VIVVS FECIT SIBI ET COIVGI KARISSIMAE BENE DE SE MERENTI QVI VIXIT ANNIS LXXXXV. SENE QVERELA tradotto: T-Sestio M[...] fece da vivo per sé e sua moglie carissima e meritevole che visse novantacinque anni. Senza litigi. L'area è delimitata da una parte dalla Rupe di San Paolo e dall'altra dal Tevere. Proprio a causa delle esondazioni del fiume e dei rovesci di acqua piovana precipitati dalla rupe la zona divenne insalubre e paludosa e, nel III d.C., la necropoli fu abbandonata. Il sito è visitabile con visite guidate organizzate saltuariamente dalla sovraintendenza previa prenotazione. Ulteriori esempi di lapidi e sarcofagi si possono ammirare nel chiostro dell'adiacente Basilica di San Paolo (costo 4 euro). Vi sono presenti sepolcri relativi ad un periodo che va dal I sec. a.C. al IV sec. d.C., diversi in un buon stato di conservazione, sono visibili anche affreschi e mosaici. Nell’ambito degli importanti lavori avvenuti nel parco per il giubileo del 2000, è stata creata una zona con una copertura per la visualizzazione a giorno di una parte del sito. Sulla parete della vicina Rupe di San Paolo dal lato che si affaccia sulla Basilica, sono visibili numerosi resti di tombe romane. Una parte dei reperti è visibile nella vicina Centrale Montemartini (museo). La visita avviene solo con adeguata prenotazione. Come contraltare c'è il fatto che è un sito non visitabile se non con guida e con gruppi prenotati per eventi sporadici. Inoltre la visita avviene "dall'alto" mentre la guida si muove nello scavo, girando attorno al parapetto. Ovviamente si perde quasi completamente la vista dei particolari e spesso anche dell'insieme ma ciò nonostante la visita risulta coinvolgente, con il racconto di molti aneddoti legati ai tanti sepolcri sovrapposti. Questo sito è conosciuto come sepolcreto Ostiense più che come necropoli di San Paolo (recenti scavi sembrano confermare l'esistenza della tomba del martire in corrispondenza della basilica). Una parte delle tombe è visibile su strada nel ristorante poco distante sotto la rupe (e una targa parla di sepolcreto Ostiense). Guardate le foto che ho scattato (le recinzioni impediscono di vedere se non si entra) e anche le altre recensioni che ho fatto su Roma e le sue meraviglie. A fantastic place .... for its history and for its wealth of artifacts. As a counterpoint there is the fact that it is a site that cannot be visited except with a guide and with groups booked for sporadic events. Furthermore, the visit takes place "from above" while the guide moves around the excavation, turning around the parapet. Obviously the sight of the details and often also of the whole is almost completely lost, but nevertheless the visit is engaging, with the story of many anecdotes related to the many superimposed tombs. This site is known as the Ostiense burial ground rather than as the necropolis of San Paolo (recent excavations seem to confirm the existence of the martyr's tomb at the basilica). Part of the tombs can be seen on the road in the restaurant not far below the cliff (and a plaque speaks of Ostiense burial ground).
