If you like to walk, take a day or half day off from the city and see Genoa from above. It is the "Giro dei Forti" (The Fort Loop) as the local call it. It can be done either as a loop or as a one way tour. I like to start it with a ride on the Casella Train and take the the Granarolo rack railway on my way back. And climb all the way up to the Forte Diamante where the wiey is truly astonishing.

Great place to have a long walk. It's easy to get there by funicular from Zecca. Great views are opening on the both sides – as the seaside, as the plain part of town which is seen to the east.

Great hike and easily accessible. Normally, you can take the funicular zecca-righi,but unfortunately it was closed for maintenance during our stay in genoa. We took the replacement bus F1 from Piazza bandiera. it takes 30 min to get to righi. From there, the signage for the hiking paths is pretty clear. You walk past the observatory down a path through the woods. Eventually you reach a road, just follow along until you see the signs. Google maps is your friend. Lots of shaded areas in the beginning and amazing views of genoa. There are various options for hiking. You can also just go up for the views without much hiking! One tip: if you come during july-august bring some mosquito/horse fly repellent. We hiked one way to forte sperone, then forte puin and lastly forte diamante. The only thing that we didn't really look into was the accessibility of the Forte's, but just reaching the forts was already rewarding itself. You cannot access all the forts, please check yourself. The most beautiful views were from forte diamante. From forte diamante, you walk between two valleys down to Trensasco, where you can catch the casella train back to genoa. This path is less maintained compared to the forte routes. It took us about 4 hours with many stops to take in the views. I think the hardest part was finding the casella train station in Trensasco ;) when you arrive in Trensasco there is a restaurant right at the end of the path, follow the car road down untill you come across a hotel, at your right side there will be a sign for the train. Follow the path along the backside of the hotel and you will reach the tracks of the casella train. Tickets for the casella train are 3 euros pp to go back to genoa manin.
