Il Museo Lombroso nasce come reparto ospedaliero per l’osservazione diagnostica del paziente: lo scopo è redigere la cartella clinica del degente e, in base al risultato dell’analisi, indirizzarlo nel reparto più adeguato alle esigenze terapico-riabilitative.
Il crescente numero di pazienti trasforma il padiglione Lombroso in luogo destinato all’ergoterapia, pratica riabilitativa basata sul lavoro costruttivo.
L’edificio cambia nuovamente destinazione, per molto tempo è al servizio del personale medico diventando biblioteca e centro di documentazione: all’interno si conservano manuali di psichiatria, documenti e opere librarie relative al manicomio.
Oggi la struttura ha uno scopo ben preciso, conservare e tramandare la memoria storica, artistica, culturale e sociale di testimonianze materiali e immateriali dell’ospedale psichiatrico volterrano. L’istituto è ora un’istituzione permanente: il Museo Lombroso.

The Lombroso Museum was born as a hospital ward for the diagnostic observation of the patient: the aim is to draw up the patient's medical record and, based on the result of the analysis, direct him to the ward that is most appropriate to the therapeutic-rehabilitation needs.
The growing number of patients transforms the Lombroso pavilion into a place for ergotherapy, a rehabilitation practice based on constructive work.
The building changes its destination again, for a long time it has been at the service of medical staff becoming a library and documentation center: inside psychiatry manuals, documents and books relating to the asylum are kept.
Today the structure has a very specific purpose, to preserve and pass on the historical, artistic, cultural and social memory of material and intangible testimonies of the Volterra psychiatric hospital. The institute is now a permanent institution: the Lombroso Museum.
