Il lago si forma nel mese di maggio a seguito dello scioglimento della neve e delle piogge (a patto che sia stato un buon anno in tal senso) che contribuiscono ad alimentare la sorgente, sempre visibile, che sgorga e forma un piccolo ruscello il quale dopo qualche decina di metri sparisce nel sottosuolo dove prosegue la sua corsa verso valle. Per raggiungerlo bisogna percorrere il sentiero K4 da località Fonte Sanbuco (sentiero K6) ... Il sentiero di media difficoltà permette di raggiungere il lago, a circa 1600 Mt, in 2 ore, 2 ore e mezza... Consiglio di indossare abbigliamento e scarpe idonee... Possibilità di parcheggiare l'auto lungo uno stradello dissestato indicato come sentiero K6, l'accesso è situato nel primo tornante che si incontra, appena fuori dal centro abitato di Barrea, in direzione Alfedena. La salita presenta un dislivello di circa 500 metri. Una volta arrivati sul posto si può tornare indietro oppure proseguire e fare quindi un anello. Io con moglie e figlia al seguito ho scelto di fare l'anello. Durante la discesa abbiamo costeggiato il canyon del Rio Torto e incontrato una grotta veramente molto bella. In questo caso il percorso si allunga ma ne vale la pena. Tutto il giro è di circa 14 km. Karst lake at the foot of Mount Petroso in Abruzzo. Completely frozen in the winter.
