L’opera raffigura una contadina foriana intenta a svolgere l’operazione della solforatura (da qui il titolo), cospargendo le viti con polvere di zolfo. La donna, raffigurata in piedi, indossa i tipici abiti da popolana lavoratrice: fazzoletto sulla testa, camicetta con maniche lunghe rimboccate sui gomiti, gonna sotto il ginocchio. Tiene appoggiata sul fianco destro la solforatrice: con la mano destra aziona l’attrezzo, il braccio sinistro è poggiato sul tubo da cui fuoriesce lo zolfo. Dal tronco di vite, raffigurato accanto al piede destro della giovane contadina, salgono i tralci fitti di foglie e grappoli che aderiscono al fianco sinistro della figura quasi fondendosi con essa e diventandone un elemento decorativo. La posa è caratterizzata da una leggera torsione del busto verso destra cui si contrappone il viso ruotato verso il lato opposto; l’espressione del viso è intensa e concentrata e l’intera figura comunica forza, freschezza ed eleganza. The work depicts a Forian peasant woman carrying out the sulfur drilling operation (hence the title), sprinkling the vines with sulfur powder. The woman, shown standing, wears the typical clothes of a common worker: handkerchief on the head, blouse with long sleeves rolled up on the elbows, skirt below the knee. He keeps the sulphuriser resting on his right side: with his right hand he operates the tool, the left arm is resting on the tube from which the sulfur comes out. From the vine trunk, depicted next to the young peasant's right foot, rise the thick branches of leaves and clusters that adhere to the left side of the figure almost merging with it and becoming a decorative element. The pose is characterized by a slight torsion of the torso to the right which is opposed to the face rotated towards the opposite side; facial expression is intense and concentrated and the whole figure communicates strength, freshness and elegance.
