The fountain recalls, with its sculptures, the two aspects of the sea, both known by the Ancona sailors: the sea horses, sacred to Poseidon, recall the storms which, according to mythology, the god of the sea could trigger; and also the dolphins, sacred to the goddess Aphrodite, who instead remember the good navigation. In this monument, therefore, the two of the Greeks of the sea are both present, with their symbols side by side.

The Fountain of the Horses was built on a project by the Baroque artist Lorenzo Daretti in 1758, with sculptures by Gioacchino Varlè.
