★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had a very bad experience, it is our first time filling gas in Italy and it was Sunday so it was self service only, we actually used the machine that started by taking our money (€50) and asking us to select a machine, we selected the one we stopped it and the machine asked us to go and fill the gas which we tried but we got no gas just to notice a copy saying “serviced” or something which means someone needs to be present to use that machine so we thought, ok let’s cancel and use another one but the machine just took our €50 in anyway as if we have filled anything.

It not because this station is not clean or not safe. There is obviously no such problem: it is clean, safe (there is even someone surveying the station all day, even on Sundays) and easy to locate (near the airport and all car rental companies).
However, I cannot believe that ESSO uses such a crap system to pay and get gas. I travelled quite a lot and many various countries in South and North Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Never ever in my life I stupidly lost a 20€ bill because the software system is unable (or maybe not designed to?) cancel an action and get back to the previous step.
Let me explain (it was Sunday, the 3rd of January, 2016, around 9 AM): pictograms on the gas dispensers show us to put the pump head in the car. So I did and went to the automatic machine to pay and choose the gas I needed. Unfortunately, you have to pay first (Visa, MasterCard or American Express are unknown, which is common in Italy; no comment) by inserting your bill, then choose your gas and then take the pump hard to your car. As the pump was already out of its supposed place, I had to put it back and lost my bill without ANY way to cancel anything.
The software system should be able to do so or at least report the issue. I cannot believe ESSO is using such prehistoric crap; it is a shame.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ TOTAL SCAM GARAGE, avoid at all cost. Asked to fill rental car to full from a 75% full tank, before returning car to rental agency. Instead the guy added a tiny bit of petrol (not full) and probably siphoned off the extra into a can. Or the pump price is rigged. Charged 22 euros for a tiny amount of petrol. No receipt. Had to rush to airport and with 72 year old mother in car wasn't going to bother confronting the guy. Tried to call the number in google and the same number on official Esso website and it is invalid! This place is really nasty. I will be making a formal complaint to Esso, the Police and Catania Airport.

I would give 0 or minus 5 if I could... we paid 50 Euros, but the gas did not come out and the guy pretended like it was our fault. We did everything as instructed.. He put his ear plugs in and just said we could try again to put money in or otherwise leave. Go to the IP gas station instead..
