The statue is next to the "Face of the Horse", on the right p. It was commissioned by the son of Niccolò III P, Leonello who wanted to exalt his father in a dignified manner. The construction was entrusted to Florentine labor and raised in 1451 on a base inspired by the Roman triumphal arches. In 1796 the statue, together with that of Borso d’Este, was reduced to pieces to steal the bronze. It was only in 1927, thanks to a sculptor from Piacenza, that he rebuilt the fifteenth-century statue through the drawings.

The bronze statue depicting Nicolò III on horseback is flanked by that of Borso D'Este seated. Those that can be admired today, however, are copies, since the originals and subsequent copies were merged to make cannonballs. They rise above the "vòlto del cavallo" which gives access to the municipal square.
