Palazzo Bentivoglio, Ferrara

Palazzo Bentivoglio is located in via Garibaldi, the street in the city center that starts from Piazza Municipale and ends in Corso Isonzo. Ancient stately home, today it houses prestigious offices and apartments for residential use. The building, built in 1449 by the will of Duke Borso d'Este, as a gift to his adviser Pellegrino Pasini, later became the home of Prince Alberto d'Este and the counts Roverella It became the property of the Bolognese family of the Bentivoglio and was renovated in 1585 by the marquis Cornelio Bentivoglio with the current prospect, designed, according to historians by Pirro Ligorio, already active in Rome and built by the local architect Giovan Battista Aleotti. As the plaques on the facade attest, the poet Ercole Bentivoglio, cardinals Guido and Cornelio resided in the palace, General Napoleon Bonaparte stayed there in 1796 and the famous hydraulic engineer Teodoro Bonati da Bondeno died in 1820. After the Second World War, Palazzo Bentivoglio became the seat of the Court of Ferrara, and after careful restoration, it housed offices and homes. The facade of Palazzo Bentivoglio, in Roman mannerist style, seems to be inspired by the facade of Palazzo Spada in Rome, for which the architect Ligorio himself worked. The rusticated portal surmounted by volutes and the windows on the ground floor with high shelves, are of an Ionic order and interspersed with armours with arrows, spears and flags in low relief, a motif that is repeated beyond the string course on the front of the main floor, where, in correspondence of the portal, the coat of arms of the Bentivoglio family stands imposingly surrounded by allegorical figures. The facade is crowned by a rich frieze with a cornice. Inside the ceilings are decorated with grotesque paintings, made in the seventeenth century. from the workshop of the Filippi, to which Sebastiano also belonged, called the Bastianino. Historic building in Ferrara very well restored. Until about 30 years ago it was the seat of the city court, now it is home to offices, clinics and apartments. There is a paid parking, very close and the building is a full historical center of Ferrara. nearby also small supermarkets and many places to eat.

Beautiful building in Ferrara with a splendid facade. Nowadays it is used as offices, doctors' offices and private homes. When you enter you enter an internal courtyard and a private parking for bicycles !!!
