Situato all'estremità delle propaggini sud-orientali del massiccio del Gran Sasso d'Italia, su di un colle, in posizione dominante sull'omonimo altopiano, E' iscritto all'albo de "I Borghi più belli d'Italia". Di origine medievale, è storicamente un centro agricolo e pastorale, ed è conosciuto per la produzione dello zafferano dell'Aquila DOP. Borgo molto bello e caratteristico con vicoli stretti e lunghe scalinate. Molto interessante la chiesa di San Sebastiano, riaperta nel 2017 dopo la ristrutturazione a causa del terremoto del 2009.
