Present in documents since 1496, the town of Borghetto d'Arroscia (province of Imperia) was born as a result of the movement of numerous families living in the villages of the hills to the bottom of the valley, under the pressure of the new economic opportunities offered in the late Middle Ages, thanks to the links increasingly intense with Lower Piedmont and the renewed exploitation of hydraulic energy. Of great value is the humpbacked medieval bridge, in good condition. In the territory of the village, as elsewhere, there is the depletion of the forest heritage and water resources, due to a persistent drought of artificial origin.

Looks scruffy but has a heart of gold - a community happy to accept everybody and anybody. Great wild swimming under the early-medieval arched bridge in summertime. The Bar del Centro does lunches and dinners, friendly relaxed place where all are made to feel welcome, locals and foreigners alike. The village once made its living on river-based industry - the Arroscia runs right through the village - and although the two river-powered olive mills and the flour mill gave up the ghost some time ago, there is still a marble-cutting yard and most recently an eco-electricity generating weir. These days it is a pleasingly mixed community, with families of Moroccan, Albanian and Latin American origin all living side by side with the original Italians. Love it!
