Fa parte di un complesso conventuale non più attivo, ma che ancora si intravede bene nella sua struttura globale. Personalmente ritengo di maggior fascino la vista esterna rispetto a quella interna, a tre navate, che ha subito saccheggi, utilizzi impropri, un terremoto abbastanza devastante e tanti rimaneggiamenti da risultarne stravolta rispetto alla sua forma e bellezza originarie. Questo almeno si legge sui libri di storia, visto che la sua costruzione risale ai primi decenni del 1200. Personalmente non mi ha trasmesso nessuna particolare emozione, purtroppo. Sempre all'esterno c'è una piccola fontana con una statua in bronzo raffigurante San Francesco. Qualche importante opera d'arte è ospitata nelle cappelle laterali, ma non ho conoscenze adeguate per parlarne. Se si è in visita a Modena e si vuole inserire San Francesco nei propri itinerari, personalmente consiglierei di passare da qui prima di visitare il Duomo con annessa torre Ghirlandina. Il Duomo è di una tale bellezza da eclissare ogni altra chiesa, monumento o palazzo modenese, ma non solo. Large church, just inside the circle of Modena's walls. At least this can be read in the history books, since its construction dates back to the early decades of the 1200s. Personally, he didn't convey any particular emotion to me, unfortunately. Also outside there is a small fountain with a bronze statue depicting St. Francis. Some important works of art are housed in the side chapels, but I don't have adequate knowledge to talk about them. If you are visiting Modena and want to include San Francesco in your itineraries, I would personally recommend that you go through here before visiting the Duomo with the adjoining Ghirlandina tower. The Cathedral is of such beauty as to eclipse any other Modenese church, monument or palace, but not only.

The originally Gothic church has undergone a heavy nineteenth-century makeover. The Deposition from the Cross by Antonio Begarelli is wonderful!
