L'intitolazione a Santa Caterina è dovuta all'attività della genovese Santa Caterina Fieschi Adorno (il cui corpo è conservato all'interno della chiesa) nell'adiacente Ospedale di Pammatone, attualmente sede del Palazzo di Giustizia. Beautiful church founded in 1488 by the Observant Friars Minor and dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata (it is in fact also known as Santissima Annunziata di Portoria, from the name of the neighborhood in which it stands). The title to Santa Caterina is due to the activity of the Genoese Santa Caterina Fieschi Adorno (whose body is kept inside the church) in the adjacent Hospital of Pammatone, currently the seat of the Palace of Justice.

Cosí accanto al nuovo edificio del Palazzo di Giustizia è rimasto questo angolo di Genova antica. La chiesa (costruita alla fine del 1400) è dedicata alla S.S. Annunziata ma è conosciuta come chiesa di Santa Caterina perchè contiene le spoglie di Santa Caterina da Genova, nobildonna che ha dedicato la sua vita ai poveri e gli ammalati. Nel corso dei secoli la chiesa ha subito modifiche; il suo aspetto attuale, rinascimentale, è opera di G.B. Castello. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale la chiesa subì danni, ancora oggi visibili. All'interno oltre al Mausoleo di Santa Caterina, con un un'urna in bronzo e cristallo e ai lati 4 statue in marmo, si trovano dipinti di Luca Cambiaso, Domenico Piola, del Carlone e affreschi di G.B. Castello, con temi del Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento. Dietro l'altare maggiore si accede ad una cripta della famiglia Grimaldi. La storia di questa chiesa è strettamente legata all'ospedale di Pammatone che oggi non esiste piú. Al suo posto sorge infatti il moderno Palazzo di Giustizia che ha mantenuto al suo interno il cortile e il colonnato settecentesco. The history of this church is closely linked to the Pammatone hospital which no longer exists today.
