The churches of Montecchio have been mentioned since ancient times: Olivieri, in the Memoirs of the Abbey of S. Tommaso in Foglia, reports a document dating back to 1213, in which the church of S. Michele Arcangelo "de Monticulo" is mentioned; in one of 1373 the churches of S. Maria and S. Giovanni "de Monticlo" are mentioned. In the Rationes Decimarum of the years 1290-92 and in the apostolic visit of 1574, we find the two simple churches of S. Michele Arcangelo and S. Maria, one located in "Monticulo" and the other in "villa Monticuli". The town, after the destruction of the castle, was called "Villa". It is not known who founded this church; nor do we know who endowed the church with the landed assets it owns. However, it appears that once it was a simple benefit. In the year 1664, as is shown by the March 6 issue of the Supreme Pontiff Alexander VII, it was erected to "cured benefit". In 1777, at the time of De Simone's pastoral visit, the church of S. Maria is the parish seat. It does not appear to have been consecrated. It is known that it was destroyed and razed to the ground by the outbreak of the war arsenal, located nearby, on 21 January 1944, at 9.20 pm. After many difficulties, the new church was erected, together with the canonical house, near the national road to Urbino, on land belonging to diocesan property. Like the previous one, it was consecrated and named after the Madonna Assunta on 20 September 1955 by S. E. Mons. Luigi Carlo Borromeo and inaugurated the following 9 October. He has no other parishes under him; she has no branch churches, although in her territory there is the church of St. Michael which depends on her without knowing what the terms of this dependence are.
