The main and oldest church of the homonymous village is named after San Donnino. The cult of the saint was not particularly widespread in the province of Florence and in Tuscany, being more than anything else linked to the territory of Fidenza (PR) and in general to northern Italy. The holy martyr was a soldier, who lived in the time of Diocletian, who renounced his possessions to spread the Christian faith. A miraculous recovery he operated on a woman bitten by a rabid dog is at the origin of his fame as a thaumaturge for the disease of hydrophobia and for epidemic diseases. His main iconographic attribute is linked to this miracle: a rabid dog that is depicted at his feet. The church of San Donnino stands on a wide open space in via Trento. The façade is preceded by a three-arched portico supported by columns surmounted by essential molded capitals. Under the arches there are three entrance portals to the building, while on the left side a fourth door introduces the vast room with a single nave where the company of the Name of Mary or of San Jacopo was located, now transformed into a meeting room. On the left side of the church you can see a small window closed by a grate that must have corresponded to an access door to the company of San Jacopo, then partially closed, while on the side you can see a low building with a portal with a lowered arch that must perhaps have been a old barn or warehouse. The interior is presented in the sober simplicity of the complete renovation in 1938. Only a well-made wooden crucifix from the end of the sixteenth century, two large canvas paintings heavily damaged by the latest flooding of the Arno - the Martirio di San Donnino by Matteo Rosselli and the Nativity by Cosimo Daddi - together with the elaborate exhibitions in pietra serena of the altars of the first half of the eighteenth century, illustrate with their presence fragmentary passages of the historical and artistic events of the church. In the apse area, the high altar made up of various qualities of marble shows the characters of the nineteenth century, while the three pleasant windows placed to close three eyes of the tribune also date back to the late thirties of the twentieth century; the inscriptions on them recall the names of the modern patrons and benefactors: the Catholic Action for the stained glass window depicting the Blessing Christ, the Conti family for the one with the figures of St. Peter, and Giuseppe Nucci for the stained glass window of St. Paul. Also in the rose window on the facade there is a stained glass window with the figure of San Donnino in the guise of a Roman soldier, as well as the two lunettes painted on the side doors of the nave, with San Francesco and Santa Teresa. The church is currently administered by the dynamic Don Gilberto, also parish priest of the nearby church of Sant'Andrea, whom I warmly thank for his kind availability and for the bibliographic material provided.
