Ancor non capisco, dopo un paio di decenni, perché macchiar di "peccati" bambini innocenti; bambini, che solo per l'essere nati, ecco che già son considerati degli inguaribili "peccatori" perenni. Ed io, ahimè, ancor niente capivo mentre la fronte al prete porgevo; mentre questi, in virtù (e che virtù!) d'un sacramento divino m'aspergeva il capo come s'usa nel rito. Dopo circa dieci anni ritornai sull'altare, per tre anni istruito su quel giorno speciale. Della fede cristiana dato fu a me insegnamento: "catechismo" si chiama tale indottrinamento. Oh, qual giornata piena assai d'allegria fu quella in cui ebbi l'eucaristia! Ricordo all'intorno tutti i presenti, non v'era ipocrisia nei lor volti contenti! Ma mi sembrò di capir che la festa vera in chiesa non era, bensì ben più avanti: nel momento d'andare ai ristoranti. Ma poveri cristiani, in cuor mio li capisco: sarà venuta a lor fame quando ebbero visto noi bambini mangiare il corpo di Cristo. Oh, Chiesa a me cara, tanto bene ti voglio... ma d'averti lasciata non me ne dolgo. Oh, my dear church: you were, in my christmas year, to give me grace baptismal.
