The church is located in the small square of the same name in the center of Catania, between Piazza Duomo and Palazzo Biscari. It has a history that begins in 1409 and was built on the ruins of an ancient temple of Bacchus. During the great earthquake of 1693 it was completely destroyed, but rebuilt in the late Baroque style. The design of the church belongs to the architect Steffano Ittar and reopened in 1729. Its single-aisled interior is adorned with beautiful frescoes, while the 19th century painting "The Immaculate" by Michele Rapisarda stands out.

L'edificazione avvenne sulle rovine di un antico tempio pagano dedicato al dio Bacco, luogo di culto per la tradizione religiosa catanese, poiché si diceva che un tempo vi sorgesse la casa natale di sant'Agata, patrona della città. beautiful church, the first foundation dates back, according to Rasà, to 1409, the year in which Queen Bianca, [1] daughter of the king of Navarre, wife of King Martin, at her second marriage, and vicar of the kingdom of Sicily, donated precious sacred furnishings to the monastery of the Benedictine nuns, still to be erected, perhaps remaining a long time guest of the sisters. Furthermore, in the 15th century, Ximene and Paola di Lerida - "spouses of great piety and noble and rich Catanese family" [2] - also contributed financially to the construction of the monastery of San Placido, even if the foundation deed, dated 4 December 1420, [3] shows that Donna Paola, now a widow, was the sole inspirer of the foundation of the religious house. The construction took place on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the god Bacchus, a place of worship for the religious tradition of Catania, as it was said that once there was the birthplace of Sant'Agata, patron saint of the city.
