I documenti fanno risalire la sua consacrazione al 1584 ma è probabile che il sito ospitasse già una chiesa dedicata a San Antonio Abate, forse l'antica parrocchiale staccatasi da Mergozzo intorno al 1300 quando la popolazione di Ornavasso aumentò notevolmente di numero con l'arrivo dei coloni Walser dei quali San Nicolao era patrono. Pare che un ornavassese della famiglia Ronchi durante una crociata in Terra Santa fu colpito in mare da una tempesta e preso dalla paura abbia invocato l'intervento di S. Nicola. Aiutato dal santo è riuscito a scampare al naufragio. Per ricordare l'evento, i nipoti costruirono la chiesa e la dedicarono al santo. La Chiesa stranamente non si trova al centro del paese ma alla fine dello stesso. Vista da lontano con la macchina, abbiamo dovuto percorrere tutto il centro per poi scendere a piedi e riuscire a vederla in tutto il suo splendore. Abbiamo chiesto agli abitanti del paese che quel giorno erano presenti davanti alla chiesa in abiti del tempo antico (c'era il vescovo in visita) per capire che la chiesa era stata costruita lassù a difesa dei nemici e soprattutto dal torrente S.Carlo e dalle sue inondazioni. La chiesa si trova proprio vicino alla vera Grotta di Babbo Natale ma non abbiamo avuto il tempo di visitarla, sarà per la prossima volta.
