La facciata disadorna fu arricchita di terrecotte verso la fine del XIX secolo. Sulla porta d'ingresso si può vedere un dipinto di Lippo di Dalmasio: la Vergine con il Bambino tra i santi Benedetto e Sisto papa. L'interno è a tre navate con piloni cruciformi, che forse racchiudono quelli antichi romanici della stessa forma. Sul muro esterno del fabbricato - a sinistra della chiesa - vi è una curiosissima epigrafe. Sulla sua interpretazione vi sono diverse leggende. La meno inverosimile sostiene che l'epigrafe fosse scritta da uno scolaro in ricordo di un altro, cagionevole di salute e di nome Procolo. The source date is ignored. L'ultimo restauro risale al 2007 che gli ha dondato l'aspetto che possiamo ammirare adesso. Sicuramente una tappa consigliata. Di certo si sa che venne ricostruita nell'XI secolo e nel corso dei secoli seguenti subì significativi rimaneggiamenti, i più importanti nel Cinquecento e nel Settecento. Curiosa l'iscrizione riportata nella lapide posta sull'esterno della chiesa, che alcuni indicano come un gioco di parole, uno scioglilingua, altri la mettono in relazione alla decapitazione di un martire che sarebbe all'origine della costruzione della chiesa.
