★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Many visitors to Bologna visit the big basilica in the center on the main square believing that it is the cathedral. They miss San Pietro, which is the cathedral of the city and the seat of the Archbishop of Bologna. Most of the current structure was built in the 1600s, but some of what continues to be visible is from an earlier era. Take the time to visit the magnificently grand baroque interior and the brightly painted inner courtyard.
