Nel 2002 è stata inserita dall' UNESCO nei patrimoni dell'umanità. Very interesting is the reinforced concrete dome built in the early 1900s on the Baroque church of 1721. o	olga lanza on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I lavori per il nuovo edificio ebbero inizio nel 1721 in sostituzione della vecchia matrice detta "San Nicolò il Vecchio" che da documenti notarili si dice che avesse origini bizantine, completamente distrutta dal terremoto del 1693. La nuova Chiesa fu aperta al culto nel 1740. Negli anni successivi furono completati la facciata, nel 1765 ebbe inizio la costruzione del campanile su progetto dell'architetto Francesco Battaglia, nel quale a lavoro ultimato(20 Marzo 1776 ) furono impiantate le campane e l' orologio. La Sacra Effige del Ss. Salvatore fu eseguita dallo scultore Girolamo Bagnasco nel 1818, il sontuoso fercolo invece venne creato nel 1842 da Domenico Leone. Il 30 agosto 1876, su decreto pontificio, la Chiesa assumeva il titolo di " Arcipresbiteriale Matrice Chiesa di " S. Nicolò - SS. Salvatore " Nel 1904 la Chiesa fu completata con la costruzione della cupola il cui progetto fu talmente straordinario da essere premiato nel 1900 alla " Mostra Internazionale " di Torino. Nel corso degli anni successivi ha avuto vari restauri, ammodernamenti, abbellimenti e consolidamento strutturale. La Chiesa è ricca di molte e varie opere d'arte di pregevole fattura e valore. Nel 1981 ebbero inizio i lavori, nei sotterranei della Chiesa, che porteranno alla creazione del ricco "Museo di Arte Sacra di S. Nicolò ". Il 28 Giugno 2002 , la Chiesa di S. Nicolò - SS. Salvatore è entrata a far parte del patrimonio UNESCO.
