Very little known, almost unexpected church on a narrow street. Despite this, like many of the city, it is very well decorated. ceiling with paintings and stuccoes and walls with wall paintings that imitate architecture. Curious image of the Virgin in polychrome wood dressed in a niche. Beautiful altar tables in gilded bronze with variegated decoration. Curious especially for what is hidden.

This church was built in the area one of the first, possibly in the 7th century or earlier. The church is sometimes called San Nicolino for its small size. The last rebuilding of the church dates from 1848. At the altar is a miraculous image of the Virgin of the 17th century. A record was kept in this church that Caravaggio took communion here in April 1605. Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, was filming an outhouse near the church in the courtyard of a house on 19, Vicolo del Divino Amore, in 1603-1605. Caravaggio settled there to meet freely with his beloved Maddalena Antonietti (Lena). Maddalena served as a model for the painting of Madonna pilgrims. Her appearance is also guessed in other works of Caravaggio. For example, in the painting Madonna Palafrenelli (Madonna with a Snake).

According to tradition, the church is very old, even prior to the time of Pope Zacharias (741-752) [1]. It has been known since the twelfth century with the appellative de prefecto [2], in reference to the nearby Palazzo dei Di Vico (today the palace of Florence), a family that in the old manuscripts is also called the Prefects, for having assumed the office of the city prefecture from Pietro Di Vico in 1297 to Giacomo Di Vico in 1485. In 1524 Gaetano di Thiene obtained the brief that legitimized the fraternity of his priests, founding the order of the Chierici Regolari Teatini. The community chose as its church San Nicola ai Prefetti, which was a small parish run by the secular clergy, but abandoned it three years later, at the time of the sack of Rome. In 1567 Pope Pius V granted the church to the Dominican Fathers of Santa Sabina, who undertook the reconstruction of the building, incorporating it within the new convent. The works began in 1582 and continued until 1730. In the mid-nineteenth century new restorations led to the reconstruction of the presbytery and the new internal decoration. Since 1927 the church has been officiated by the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate.

I stumbled upon this church this afternoon on a walk downtown. It is very small and cozy, a church where people go to pray and reflect. It has a single nave, the floors are in marble, the ceiling entirely painted; on the walls you can admire various paintings and a wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario. The lighting is entrusted to both antique lamps and modern spotlights that illuminate the works of art. On the sides of the altar are the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Conception. A pleasant discovery.
