Как часто бывает в Италии,сам храм снаружи не предвещает ничего особенного, но когда заходишь вовнутрь, попадаешь в необычайно красивое, гармоничное и роскошно декорированное фресками пространство. Зайдите обязательно. Вечером сбоку открывают винтажный магазинчик, в путеводителях он назван блошиным рынком, но это все-таки магазинчик с подержанными вещами.

The beautiful church of San Martino is located in the sestiere Castello near the Arsenal. Originally founded in the 10th century, it was rebuilt from 1546 to 1610 according to the plan of Jacop Sansovino. The title of San Martino di Tours suggests the presence of a colony of Lombards, especially dedicated to his character or Ravenna fugitives, in relation to the patron saint of one of their basilicas. Martino of Tours was a Christian bishop born in the fourth century. A native of Pannonia, in present-day Hungary, he served in Galia of the late Roman Empire. He is among the first non-martyr saints proclaimed by the Catholic Church, worshiped by both Orthodox and Coptic believers. It is celebrated on November 11, the day of his funeral held in today’s Tours. He is one of the founders of monasticism in the West. The church is interesting from the outside as well as from the inside. A first refurbishment was built between the 9th and 10th centuries, when it assumed the Venetian-Byzantine style, typical of the places of worship of the time. The current construction dates back to the sixteenth century, based on a project by Jacopo Sansovino. The architect rotated the entire structure ninety degrees and gave it a square floor plan, adding two chapels to each side and the vaulted presbytery. The facade (1897) was designed by Federico Berchet and Domenico Rupolo. The interior of the church is magnificent. The vault is frescoed with "Saint Martin in Glory" by Jacopo Guarana, with the "quadratura" ("Illusionistic ceiling painting", which includes the techniques of perspective di "sotto in sù" and "quadratura", is the tradition in Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo art) painted by Domenico Bruni. An intresting funeral monument (1633) to Doge Francesco Erizzo was completed by Matteo Carneri. A chapel has a fresco cycle of "the Glory of the Eucharist" flanked by "Sacrifice of Isaac" and "Sacrifice of Mechizedek (Malki Tzedek)" on the walls by Fabio Canal. On the third altar there is the beautiful "the Madonna Addolorata" by Palma il Giovane, flanked by "Tre angeli che recano", "simboli della passione" and "Deposizione di Cristo" by the same author.
