Here is a church that you don't expect, but that shouldn't surprise you, because Venice never has anything that isn't beautiful. Born as a hospital for lepers, which was then rightly moved to an island, it became the hospital church and concert hall, thus explaining the large vestibule, which isolates it from the noise. Inside, baroque, there are two monumental works by Tintoretto and Veronese, and only for these is the deviation. There is also the monumental tomb of Alvise Mocenigo, heroic admiral of the Serenissima fleet. Do not enter Rialto or San Marco, Venice is the ideal city to lose yourself ...

Wonderful .. pity that the reason for the visit ... was a funeral.

Very nice church in the middle of a hospital, which is also beautiful to look at.

To see, absolutely. The double internal façade is remarkable. Born as a hospital for lepers, it now pretends to be the Chapel for the Civil Hospital of Saints John and Paul, a must visit! I suggest arriving in Campo Ss. Giovanni e Paolo, take a coffee in the historic (delicious) Rosasalva pastry shop, and then visit the Basilica, the Hospital (which internally has a delightful cloister, inhabited by dozens of cats!) And continue along the beautiful foundation, up to the church of San Lazzaro dei mendicanti. Once you have left you can continue a few dozen meters and you will be on the shore, at the Fondamenta Nove, in front of the spectacle of the North Lagoon. From here you can continue by boat to visit the islands ... but this is another story ....

This is a very lovely church. A little off the beaten track, but well worth the effort.

Magnificent church full of history with a Crucifixion by Veronese and a St-Ursula with the thousand virgins by Tintoretto. The cloisters around the church used to be an hospice for poor people without a home. It taught the men a manual work, and the girls who had talent music. It became very famous for the concerts given by those girls. The concerts were given to the Patricians of the city who in exchange gave many donations to the church. The father of Antonio Vivaldi taught music there. At the entrance of the church is a grand arch of triumph dedicated to admiral Alvise Mocenigo, a hero of the wars against the Turks (1650s) to defend the island of Crete. Maps of various forts of the island are to be found on the arch. The hospice was transformed in a military hospital during the Napoleonic occupation (1806). When Venice became a part of the Austrian empire (1815), the Habsburgs transformed it in a civil hospital which it still is today. I must thank the wonderful lady present at the church for all those informations. If you have any questions concerning the history and symbolic of the building, ask her and she will be glad to enlighten you.
