Fu costruito nel XIII secolo da frà Nicolò Paglia di Giovinazzo, seguace di san Domenico; la tradizione locale afferma che sia stato il sesto convento di quell'ordine e che fu registrato nel 1612 tra le case della provincia monastica di Puglia.[1] La chiesa fu edificata tra il 1679 e il 1704, su un preesistente impianto devastato più volte dai Turchi tra XV e XVI secolo. The foundation of the Dominican convent complex of Tricase has been attested since the fifteenth century. La sua spettacolare ed imponente facciata con relativa e ampia scalinata la rende importante rispetto alla sua posizione che la esalta sulla centralissima Piazza Pisanelli che la ospita. Lateralmente ha un'altra porticina d'accesso con annessa scaletta, oltre al particolare campanile posto affianco alla torre dell'orologio.
