Nella parte inferiore la muratura è costituita da grandi blocchi di pietra arenaria, poi prosegue alternando cotto e pietra. Il portale centrale presenta una strombatura formata da pilastrini e semicolonne, sopra la lunetta centrale si apre una grande finestra ogivale in cotto, databile al XIV secolo, che sostituisce il rosone originario, di cui sopravvive l’arco a tutto sesto. L’interno è a tre navate, le minori terminanti in absidi semicircolari, la maggiore in un coro a pianta rettangolare, che risale al 1564. Le navate sono formate da quattro campate, più transetto non sporgente e presbiterio. The church of Santa Maria Canale is the only one in the city that has maintained its ancient Romanesque appearance. The facade is currently 'gabled'. In the lower part the masonry is made up of large blocks of sandstone, then continues alternating brick and stone. The central portal has a splay formed by pillars and semi-columns, above the central lunette there is a large ogival terracotta window, dating back to the fourteenth century, which replaces the original rose window, of which the round arch survives. The interior has three naves, the minor ones ending in semicircular apses, the major in a rectangular choir, which dates back to 1564. The naves are made up of four bays, plus a non-protruding transept and presbytery.
