Nel 1538 fu istituito a Campli il monastero benedettino femminile di S. Maria degli Angeli. Sorse nei locali appartenenti all’omonima confraternita, incorporandone le case, la chiesa e le rendite. Lo storico Nicola Palma scrive che il governo del convento fu affidato al P. Priore dei Celestini della Badia di S. Onofrio e fondatrice fu la concittadina Maria Francesca Maccabei, già monaca in S. Maria delle Vergini di Ascoli Piceno. La badessa ne prese possesso il 13 ottobre 1539, pur non entrando in clausura prima del 1° giugno 1540. La duchessa di Campli, Margherita d’Austria, tramite il Signor Curri, suo erario, ottenne al cenobio ricche elemosine. Margherita, durante la visita agli Stati Farnesiani nel settembre 1542, si recò al monastero. Il vescovo di Teramo, non gradendo la giurisdizione dei Celestini sulle suore, vietò loro di riconoscerli quali superiori, sotto pena di censure. Le benedettine fecero ricorso alla Santa Sede. La causa fu vinta dal presule aprutino nel 1548, il quale inviò a Campli, il 12 luglio dello stesso anno, il Vicario diocesano per prenderne possesso. La confraternita di S. Maria degli Angeli dovette trasferirsi nella Chiesa di S. Benedetto. Lo stesso Palma informa che fu aggregata all’Arciconfraternita della Carità di Roma nel 1615. A causa di un fosso nel quale la chiesa minacciava di sprofondare, nel 1645 il pio sodalizio si trasferì nel tempio della SS. Annunziata. Rovinato anche questo, la confraternita si sciolse. Fino alla metà del XVII secolo furono scarsi gli introiti del convento. Alla morte del benestante Capitano Sinibaldo Tosti, venuto a mancare senza aver avuto figli dalla moglie Girolama Spitilli, divenne erede dei suoi possedimenti D. Maria Maddalena, sua sorella e monaca di S. Maria degli Angeli. Il monastero scampò alla soppressione del 1811 perché ospitava quattordici religiose professe. Oggi è in piedi solo la chiesa, sconsacrata e recentemente restaurata e trasformata in auditorium. Sempre il Palma dà notizia, in passato, dell’esistenza di ben due cenobi benedettini femminili a Campli.
