L'antica chiesa venne demolita all'inizio del XIX secolo e integralmente ricostruita in stile neoclassico su disegno dell'architetto senese Agostino Fantastici.
The first place of worship in Montalcino dedicated to the Holy Savior was the Romanesque parish church of the same name, dating back to the 11th century; it was elevated to the status of the cathedral of the diocese of Montalcino when the latter was founded on 13 July 1462 at the behest of Pope Pius II.
The ancient church was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century and completely rebuilt in neoclassical style based on a design by the Sienese architect Agostino Fantastici. Construction began in 1818 and ended in 1832; the cathedral was consecrated in 1844 by bishop Paolo Bertolozzi on April 24th.
The church was restored at the behest of the bishop Alfredo del Tomba in 1934; in 1986, with the suppression of the diocese, it became the co-cathedral of the archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino.
The exterior is characterized by the facade, preceded by a high pronaos, without a tympanum; at the center of the high marble cornice, supported by six Ionic brick columns with marble capitals, is the following inscription in Latin: «NON EST IN ALIO ALIQUO SALUS» «In no other is there salvation».

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A beautiful church that sits at the top of Montalcino. Best photographed in the morning. The courtyard is very serene and is shaded in the afternoon.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not quite what I expacted, when I saw the Netflix documentary, I wanted to go there and experience the atmosphear sitting with bunch of other people you don't know and sharing meal and it looked so nice and cozy but we ended up sitting alone at that big table, later on two more people joined and that was it. However, food was excellent and Dario himself of course. At the end it worked out well... two other restaurants and the bucher shop were packed though.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The history of this church are sometimes unknown and a little obscure however it is worth a visit. You pay to enter and then have free reign to explore. Note the flying buttresses, mosaic floor, altar and side altars,
We went on a tour that took us to the top of the cathedral and the views were spectacular. Note that there were 79 steps to the top so for those that are frail or not fit may find it a challenge. There is a very good touristy shop as well. Toilets are available. Parking is a nightmare. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly.
