★ ★ ★ ★ ★ È situata in Piazza Indipendenza, dove nell'epoca romana era il Forum Aureum, costruita su una base di antiche Mura Ciclopiche. La cattedrale è dedicata a Maria Assunta, ha tre navate, a croce latina, di stile semigotico primitivo. Provata, ma meno delle altre chiese cittadine, dal terremoto del 1915. Ma a distruggerla completamente fu l'incendio di un anno dopo, la notte del 12-13 gennaio 1916. Restarono in piedi solo le mura massicce, di pietra squadrata. Con il terremoto e l'incendio andarono perse per sempre alcune opere d'arte come la tela dell'Assunta di Taddeo Zuccari posta nel mezzo di un bellissimo soffitto a cassettoni con rosoni dorati ad oro zecchino, tutto perso definitivamente con il terremoto e l'incendio. Ricostruita sulla base originale e restaurata più volte perse però molto della sua primitiva bellezza grazie anche a scelte scellerate fatte per interessi economici personali, non ultimo, un "ascensore" all'interno del torrione. Nonostante tutto ciò resta una delle attrazioni culturali della città.
It is located in Piazza Indipendenza, where the Forum Aureum was built in Roman times, built on the basis of ancient Cyclopean walls. The cathedral is dedicated to Maria Assunta, has three naves, with a Latin cross, of primitive semi-Gothic style. Proven, but less than the other city churches, by the earthquake of 1915. But it was completely destroyed by the fire of a year later, on the night of 12-13 January 1916. Only the massive walls of squared stone remained standing. With the earthquake and the fire some works of art were lost forever such as the canvas of the Assumption by Taddeo Zuccari placed in the middle of a beautiful coffered ceiling with rose gold leaf rosettes, all lost definitively with the earthquake and the fire. Rebuilt on the original base and restored several times, however, it lost much of its primitive beauty thanks also to villainous choices made for personal economic interests, not least, an "elevator" inside the tower. Despite all this, it remains one of the cultural attractions of the city.
