You can enter only with guided tour that is a little bit short, but good. It is cold down there.

Strongly recommend seeing with a tour guide to explain the meaning of catacombs to early Christians versus other burial methods. And the immensity of the effort to dig is amazing and this catacomb is “medium” in size.

Kate led us down into the fourth century church, built on the site that two martyrs were buried after being killed in the persecutions of Diocletian. The church was later increased in size and the roof raised about 4m. The catacombs were in use for about 400 years and were almost all plain slots in the tufa stone, cut wide enough for a body wrapped in a shroud. There were no burial goods or offerings left behind although some families had rooms or tombs that they shared and some had frescoes on their graves. The belief was in imminent resurrection so the bodies here were just 'sleeping' until they could be refilled with an immortal spirit. Almost all have now rotted to dust. The catacombs in this area extend for 12 km and contain over 20,000 tombs, a lot of which had multiple occupants. Frustratingly we couldn't take photos but the corridors were low and narrow and the tombs, with one exception, just holes. The exception was a fourth century fresco depicting a young Jesus teaching the 12 disciples and St Peter and St Paul. A fascinating insight into this aspect of our heritage and Kate was an excellent guide, engaging and knowledgable.

Visited also the other catacombs (S Castillo and Sebastiano) multiple times. Pricing is equal, tours are more or less equal. The nice thing of the Domitilla catacombs is that it’s not that touristic. The counterpoint is that it doesn’t go as deep as the Castillo catacombs. Nice place outside to have a picknick.

I had an incredible experience at the Catacombs of Domitilla. I highly suggest taking a guided tour. My guide gave us great contextual information and helped me understand the history of Christianity in Rome and the birth and existence of the catacombs. Of course there is the incredible highlight of this particular series of catacombs — the painting St. Peter and St. Paul, which is the oldest fresco image of them in the world. It’s amazing that it is left exposed — in other countries something like this might be under bulletproof glass. The entrance to this site is slightly out of the way, so be sure you prepare to get there. Taking a taxi or bus is probably easiest. You can also get here by electric scooter or bicycle, though it’s slightly risky. Walking might take quite a while. Hydrate and use the bathroom before going under!

Not much remains to be seen after ages of plundering. A good guide might compensate with a story though!

Maybe the best I did a Roma. Was lucky. 2 hours down in Catacombe with a german speaking priest alone. It starts with the only subterranean cathedral. Phantastic - and empty nower days.
