The long tub of the Canopus is perhaps the most characteristic and fascinating monument of Villa Adriana. Made in a small valley, the Canopus (the name is taken from that of a canal that once connected Alexandria in Egypt to the Nile delta) is 120 meters long and 18 meters wide. The terminal part consists of an exedra which was used for outdoor banquets of the emperor and his court.
On the opposite side there is the colonnade with the beautiful statue of Ares, while one of the sides is characterized by a row of caryatids and sileni canefori (carriers of baskets).

The Canopus is undoubtedly one of the most captivating places in the Villa.
Also in this case it is an immense swimming pool surrounded by marble statues representing Ares, Hermes and Athena, two silenes, the two Amazons of Phidias and Polykleitos.
Pirro Ligorio, a famous Neapolitan architect in the service of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, is responsible for the recognition of the Canopus mentioned in the biography of Adriano (Vita Hadriani) in the "valle longhissima" in front of the apsidal pavilion with water features, which he defined the temple of the god Canopus or Neptune.
The identification of this area of the villa with the Egyptian canal that connected the homonymous city of Canopus (site of a famous temple dedicated to Serapis) with Alexandria on the Nile delta is widely documented in archaeological literature.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful architectural ensemble, where Mother Nature joins and offers our eyes with extreme beauty. For a long time, the real reason for the construction of this place has been asked, which constitutes a personal tribute by Emperor Hadrian to his Favorite Pupil Antínoo. This tank that unites the Latin and Egyptian cultures, represents the Miditerranean Sea that from Rome leads to Egypt, and the small tank that comes to connect to the big tank, represents the Nile Delta. A must visit for lovers of ancient history.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A very nice place to spend the day taking in history from 2,000 years ago. The audio guide was very good at providing information at stops along the way.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The central and best known part of the villa, truly amazing. You need to come early in the day to see this in the good light and without too many people around it .
