A Maria Immacolata si rivolsero e si ritennero salvati durante una pestilenza attorno al 1620.
Per questo motivo si votarono alla difesa della verginita' della Madonna ben prima che il dogma venisse proclamato dalla Chiesa.
Poiche' il Duomo, semidistrutto dai bombardamenti resto' inagibile fino agli anni 70, svolse le funzioni di Chiesa principale.

All interno oltre alla meravigliosa cupola,alla corona degli angeli sotto il lanternone opera del Cefaly,possiamo trovare vari altari,e singolari statue lignee di santi come san Michele e san Vitaliano,una particolare venerazione viene riservata a santa Rita,per la quale ogni anno in occasione della festività,viene fatta cadere un emozionante pioggia di rose,da vedere!
