Viene riportata l’esistenza delle primitive Chiese di Santa Maria e di San Bartolomeo, di carattere eremitico, che costituivano un punto di riferimento fondamentale per i viaggiatori che transitavano verso la Valle. Si pensò di realizzare, attorno al 1885, una nuova Basilica per accogliere il numero crescente dei pellegrini. Attualmente, 2018, la Basilica si trova in ristrutturazione ed è accessibile quindi solo il piccolo museo dei presepi, manufatti realizzati dai paesi limitrofi, e i diorama degli ultimi giorni di vita di Gesù. Tradition places the construction of the sanctuary around the fourth century, by S. Eusebio, the first bishop of Vercelli. È tuttavia possibile visitare la parte inferiore dove è collocato il museo dei Presepi, contenente vari Presepi da tutto il mondo. La chiesa è a pianta centrale e ha un aspetto molto imponente sia esternamente che internamente. Fatta per essere individuata da lontano. Viene chiamata Chiesa superiore o nuova. Di forma circolare all'interno oltre alla rassegna di presepi sulla parte a sinistra, impressionano le enormi colonne che reggono l'alta cupola, peccato, anche qui, che solo due colonne si mostrano nella loro bellezza, le altre risultano imbrigliate. Alcune pareti sono decorate e ricche di affreschi, però una parte è completamente grezza. La cripta riproduce la Madonna, ma quella suggestiva rimane nella Basilica antica impressive as it towers, with that huge dome at the head of the equally vast Sanctuary of Oropa located in the alpine amphitheater above Biella.
