G	Giuseppe Battaglia on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La basilica di cui si parla si trova nel centro di Grotte di Castro uno dei tanti fantastici paesi della Tuscia viterbese. E' stata edificata intorno al 1685, se non erro, su una chiesa preesistente risalente al secolo ottavo e dedicata a Giovanni Battista. Vi giunge percorrendo un corso, in realtà è quasi un vicolo acciotolato con costruzioni particolari. Si giunge quindi ad una piazza davanti alla quale si può ammirare la Basilica. Lo stile è quello barocco e si lascia ammirare per i pregevoli intarsi. Se può interessare andando avanti e una volta giunti in via Roma, scendendo a destra , sulla sinistra della stra si vede un bel giardino di fronte al quale si trova la fontana grande eretta intorno al 1885 come testimonianza dell'acquedotto portato nel paese. E	Enrico Ripamonti on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ E' una scenografica costruzione barocca risalente al 1625 quando andò a sostituire una preesistente chiesa paleocristiana dedicata a san Giovanni sull'altare della quale il predicatore cappuccino frate Angelo da Ronciglione aveva fatto posare nel 1616 una statua in legno policromo riproducente la Madonna. La statua venne accolta dal popolo di Grotte con grande entusiasmo e subito circondata da particolare devozione perché ritenuta miracolosa. La vecchia chiesa di san Giovanni si rivelò quindi inadeguata ad accogliere i pellegrini che giungevano da ogni dove e fu quindi sostituita dall'attuale santuario dove ancora si celebra - ogni dieci anni - una solenne festa a ricordo dell'incoronazione della statua avvenuta nel 1728. It is a spectacular Baroque construction dating back to 1625 when it replaced a pre-existing early Christian church dedicated to St. John on the altar of which the Capuchin preacher friar Angelo da Ronciglione had had a polychrome wooden statue reproducing the Madonna laid in 1616. The statue was received by the people of Grotte with great enthusiasm and immediately surrounded by particular devotion because it was considered miraculous. The old church of San Giovanni was therefore inadequate to welcome pilgrims who came from everywhere and was therefore replaced by the current sanctuary where a solemn celebration is still celebrated - every ten years - in memory of the coronation of the statue which took place in 1728.

La facciata semplice e bella nella sua bicromia nulla fa presagire dell'interno sontuoso, ricchissimo di opere d'arte e arredi sacri. Cuore della devozione grottana, superbo coronamento alla visita del magico centro storico che, attraverso suggestive vie e vicoli, conduce alla piazza sulla quale si erge. Splendid Baroque church inserted in a homogeneous and preserved medieval context. The simple and beautiful façade in its two-tone color does not portend the sumptuous interior, full of works of art and sacred furnishings. Heart of grotesque devotion, superb crowning of the visit to the magical historic center which, through suggestive streets and alleys, leads to the square on which it stands.
