★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Once upon a time, this arc was made of wood but in the 17th century, the original wooden structure was replaced with stone. This arc is the entry to the Ostuni church and it is intricately designed. I really enjoyed seating on the church steps and people watching. This arc created a popular square for people to hang out and pass through.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Palazzo Vescovile (The Bishop’s Palace) on the right side of the cathedral and the Palazzo del Seminario (The Seminar’s Palace) on the left side are linked by the Arco Stoppa (The Scoppa Arch). Originally the Arch was made of wood but in 1750 it was replaced by a stone one. On the very top of the Arch you can see the Latin inscription which describes that event: “PONS ERAT E LIGNO / CONSTRUXIT MARMORE /SCOPPA / MUNIAT UT TIMIDIS / PER LOCA TUTA VIAM / CESI RECTOR FECIT /A. D. 1750”. The bishop Francesco Antonio Scoppa’s coat of arms can be seen on the arch.

The side of the cathedral has real windows, whereas the entrance side has blocked off partitioned arches, awesome.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful architecture steep in history and is a “must see” when in Ostuni. It can be crowded in the evening when everyone is out enjoying the cooler air, but all are polite and enjoying themselves.
