E stride non poco il traffico della via Ostiense alle mie spalle, con la pace che si trova nella corte dell’orto meraviglioso. Qui, tra piante dalle qualità sorprendenti, coltivate secondo una millenaria tradizione, si ha la possibilità di cogliere l’essenza delle meraviglie del Creato. Un toccasana per il corpo e l'anima, l'ideale per meditare, sotto il pergolato, attraverso gli ambienti che costituiscono il giardino, in un tripudio di colori e profumi. Sorge lungo la via Ostiense, nell'omonimo quartiere, vicino alla riva sinistra del Tevere, a circa 2 km fuori dalle mura aureliane (da cui il suo nome), uscendo dalla Porta San Paolo. Si erge sul luogo che la tradizione indica come quello della sepoltura dell'apostolo Paolo (a circa 3 km dal luogo - detto "Tre Fontane" - in cui subì il martirio e fu decapitato); la tomba del santo si trova sotto l'altare papale. Per questo, nel corso dei secoli, è stata sempre meta di pellegrinaggi; dal 1300, data del primo Anno Santo, fa parte dell'itinerario giubilare per ottenere l'indulgenza e vi si celebra il rito dell'apertura della Porta Santa. Fin dall'VIII secolo la cura della liturgia e della lampada votiva sulla tomba dell'apostolo è stata affidata ai monaci benedettini dell'annessa abbazia di San Paolo fuori le mura. L'intero complesso degli edifici gode del beneficio dell'extraterritorialità della Santa Sede, pur trovandosi nel territorio della Repubblica Italiana. The papal basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, the second largest after that of St. Peter in the Vatican. It rises along the Via Ostiense, in the district of the same name, near the left bank of the Tiber, about 2 km outside the Aurelian walls (hence its name), exiting the Porta San Paolo. It stands on the place that tradition indicates as that of the burial of the apostle Paul (about 3 km from the place - called "Tre Fontane" - where he suffered martyrdom and was beheaded); the saint's tomb is located under the papal altar. For this reason, over the centuries, it has always been a destination for pilgrimages; since 1300, the date of the first Holy Year, it is part of the Jubilee itinerary to obtain the indulgence and the rite of opening the Holy Door is celebrated there. R	Rudi Hesse on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Directly attached to the church with the same name you will love this cloister, the garden like strucure, and especially the wonderful columns. Every column seems to be unique. Enjoy the silence and the fresh air, two things that are not easy to get in Rome.
