This place is worth a visit, 1 hour north of Rome, the whole town of Orvieto is amazing and this well is a really cool place to visit. It is a lot of steps to the bottom (248 if I remember) so make sure you can do it. The way they designed this well so people could walk down to get water and walk up a different way is really cool.

Amazing example of a well transformed in a monument, highly structured and a great architectonic landmark. It is still possible to visit it even during Covid restrictions (8/1/2022)

During the sack of Rome in the 15th century Pope Clement took refuge in Orvieto. The people dug up the well to supply water as they feared it to be insufficient during the siege. In the bottom of this 174ft well there's a secret escape passage for the Pope. Until today, it is closed for the public. The residents in Orvieto continuously and accidentally discovering deep wells, Etruscan equipments and houses underneath their houses. I suggest you see it. 3,50€ for a group of 6. Paid parking in Piazza del Popolo we walked from there to Duomo di Orvieto. Took a bus 1,30€ bus back and forth to Pozzo. You can also park the car near the pozzo and go there first before going to Duomo. 4-5hours is enough to visit their main tourist attractions.

Interesting place to visit. It does give you a good sense of how hard the inhabitants of the city have worked to survive during times of a siege. But as you'd probably expect, it's very humid down the bottom.

Great attraction in the city of Orvieto, it's a deep well with round stairs (people said around 500 steps each way lol) but it's so interesting! The ticket is 5€, reduced to 3.50 for groups of 6 or over. In my opinion is worth the visit :)

Another interesting and inexpensive adventure. I did not do the complete walk down approximately 500 steps. Down would have been fine but coming back up would not be as fun.

Medieval town lots of interesting views to offer. Restaurants and shops are on the main streets. More flat with 20 steps up and down.
