Un tempo era annessa alla Campania, con cui confina, la posizione a soli 61 chilometri da Caserta influisce soprattutto su alcune caratteristiche linguistico-culturali. Il borgo di Venafro è circondato da mura e ha il suo punto più alto nel Castello Pandone, di origine longobarda, che ospita al suo interno il Museo Nazionale del Molise, custode di opere del territorio regionale di grande valore storico. La cittadina sorge ai piedi del monte Santa Croce e si trova a un’altezza di 222 metri sul livello del mare, in una piana circondata da monti. Per questo motivo, il clima è di tipo sub-continentale. Venafro è conosciuta anche come la “città delle 33 chiese”, per il gran numero di edifici religiosi presenti sul suo territorio, di cui alcune chiuse al culto e abbandonate.
