Magical place for a not too demanding walk (but recommended boots, many stones and pebbles): in winter it is very very easy to spot the chamois that descend into the gorge

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A due passi dal paese di Fara San Martino, conosciuto soprattutto per essere la sede del pastificio De Cecco, c'è una Petra in sedicesimo, nascosta in uno dei valloni che scendono dalla vetta del monte Amaro.
Si tratta del vallone di Santo Spirito, che ospita al suo interno i resti dell'Abbazia di San Martino in Valle, fondata nel VII secolo, in parte scavata nella roccia e raggiungibile solo attraverso una lunga e stretta spaccatura - uno "slot canyon" direbbero gli americani - larga un paio di metri, aperta tra due altissime pareti di roccia calcarea.
La gola si allarga dopo questa strettoia a formare una stretta valle, sempre limitata da muraglie di roccia alte centinaia di metri, che risale in tre "salti" l'intero dislivello del massiccio fino a raggiungere le aride distese sommitali.
Il torrente Verde che la percorre l'ha scavata attraverso i secoli, dapprima con l'apporto delle acque di scioglimento dei ghiacciai e poi con quello molto più irregolare delle piogge. Il suo corso si nasconde sotto alle ghiaie e ai detriti per riemergere a volte con violenza, come accadde nel settembre 1818 quando l'acqua eruppe sommergendo completamente l'abbazia e seppellendone i resti sotto una grande massa di detriti.
Dopo quasi cent'anni di abbandono, è stata recuperata nel corso del Novecento e riportata interamente alla luce nei primi anni Duemila, valorizzando ulteriormente luogo che era già stupefacente dal punto di vista naturalistico e che consiglio vivamente a tutti di visitare.
A stone's throw from the town of Fara San Martino, known above all for being the headquarters of the De Cecco pasta factory, there is a Petra in sixteenth, hidden in one of the valleys that descend from the summit of Mount Amaro.
This is the Santo Spirito valley, which houses the remains of the Abbey of San Martino in Valle, founded in the 7th century, partly dug into the rock and reachable only through a long and narrow crack - a "slot canyon" they would say the Americans - a couple of meters wide, open between two very high limestone walls.
The gorge widens after this bottleneck to form a narrow valley, always bounded by rock walls hundreds of meters high, which climbs the entire difference in height of the massif in three "jumps" until it reaches the arid expanses of the summit.
The Verde torrent that runs through it has carved it out over the centuries, first with the contribution of the melting waters of the glaciers and then with the much more irregular one of the rains. Its course hides under the gravels and debris to re-emerge at times with violence, as it happened in September 1818 when the water erupted completely submerging the abbey and burying the remains under a large mass of debris.
After almost a hundred years of neglect, it was recovered during the twentieth century and brought to light entirely in the early 2000s, further enhancing a place that was already amazing from a naturalistic point of view and that I highly recommend everyone to visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Unter der Woche sind die Parkplätze kostenlos. Der Beginn des Wanderwegs führt imposant zwischen steilen Felsen durch die Schlucht, an einer Klosterruine vorbei. Das vallone ist für uns der Umkehrpunkt gewesen, ab dort beginnt dann ein steilerer Aufstieg. Bis dahin ist es nicht weit, ca 1 h bei entspanntem gehen.
Das vallone selbst bietet Ruhe und viel Schatten ansonsten konnten wir jedoch nichts besonderes erkennen. Eine tolle kleine Wanderung
Parking spaces are free during the week. The beginning of the hiking trail leads imposingly between steep rocks through the gorge, past a ruined monastery. The vallone was the turning point for us, from there a steeper ascent begins. It's not far until then, about 1 hour walking relaxed.
The vallone itself offers tranquility and a lot of shade but otherwise we couldn't see anything special. A great little hike
