β β β β β Very impressive. Sad story of the 1963 disaster (October 9). Two hour guided tour well worth it. A landslide filled the reservoir behind the dam creating a wave of 125 or 200 meters that distroyed the village Longarone (see the village in the background between the mountains). Over 200 people (including many children) lost their lives. It's a story of corruption and as always, money is more important than people's lives)

β β β β β It seems great, BUT we couldn't visit it and get past the main gate because we had to book a guided tour BEFORE visiting there. Otherwise there is no one to buy the tickets and you will be stuck on a locked gate like us. We even found a group visiting there with an official employee and tried to buy a ticket but he responded that we had to book online otherwise we can't visit the dam.

β β β β β Memory of an environmental disaster.
Located in the middle of Friulian Dolomite National Parks, stands the unused dam as the witness of probably one of the worst environmental disasters of Italy.
Park your car and take a guided tour (cost @β¬10) of an hour and half to know about the disaster story.
The tour includes a walk on the dam with commentary from experienced guides telling you about the story of 9 October 1963 that killed almost 2000 people, including about 500 children.
The nature trail is beautiful. The tour is sad. It is a way to remember the importance of being environment sensitive in the modern day.

β β β β β A reminder of the respect needed for the power and sometimes cruel beauty of nature. Definitely worth a visit if travelling through the Dolomites. This was the site of a terrible tragedy in 1963 when a massive landslide in the night from the slopes of Monte Toc above displaced millions of litres of water over the dam, drowning 1910 people (Including any children) in the village below. The dam is now disused and the site of a number of moving monuments and memorials to those who lost their lives.

β β β β β A lesser-known landmark in a fairly remote valley, but well worth the visit. The dam was built in the 60s and caused a major catastrophe, but it still stands.
You can walk right up to the dam from the rear side, and you can walk on top of it, but only if you join a guided tour. Though the tour is nice, it's only available in Italian, but even if you don't speak the language, you can still enjoy the stroll over the dam and the amazing views from it
