The terraces of the Duomo are as beautiful as the whole cathedral, they return you to the Middle Ages. If you have not taken the lift card, you must go to the narrow stairs to the top of the cathedral. From this place you have a great view of Milan as well as on the roof of the cathedral itself which is all of marble. The terraces are spread around the entire cathedral, so the tour takes a long time ... I advise you to visit every part of the cathedral's roof.

The Terrazza sul Duomo is a historically gorgeous sight to see. It’s been beautifully restored, renovated and maintained over the many years considering the volume of people cycling in and out of the area.

As opposed to most cathedrals where you simply go inside, at the Duomo di Milano, you can actually purchase a separate ticket to climb to the roof for amazing views. You can choose to either climb the stairs or take an elevator to the top. There is a bit of a price difference in tickets depending on your choice, so make sure you choose the right one. There’s also almost always a much longer waiting line for the elevator. For those wondering, I took the stairs and they aren’t bad. It’s not as exhausting and claustrophobic as many other church climbs I’ve done. Once at the top, the views are stunning. You can’t fully appreciate the intricate detail of the stonework on top of the cathedral until you get to the top and are suddenly in a forest of spires and statues. Be sure to leave plenty of time to stroll around and admire everything. The views of the city beyond the cathedral can’t be beat. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition of new and old. This place can get hot and crowded on a warm day. And obviously rain would make for an unpleasant experience. Plan accordingly. For those afraid of heights, there are plenty of railings and because of the shape of the roof, there are no steep overlooks. Everything feels safe and secure. I don’t mind heights, but being around those who are, I think this would be a comfortable experience.

The “Terrazza sul Duomo” provides a nice view of the city and the Piazza below. The terrazza can be reached with an elevator, but with a pair of fresh legs it can also be reached by climbing the stairs. Being on top of the Duomo feels safe and there are no risk of people falling.

Wonderful view of the city. BEWARE: Even if you take the lift, there is quite a bit of walking involved. If you want to take the lift down = you have to backtrack. On the other hand when you go down the stairs and stairs and stairs = you will be inside the Duomo
