Di enorme valore storico e testimoniale perché in quei locali si riunirono dopo essersi separati dal Partito socialista, un gruppo minoritario di persone, tra cui Armando Bordiga, Antonio Gramsci, Umberto Terracini, Angelo Tasca, Palmiro Togliatti, e per i livornesi illustri, Ilio Barontini. Era il 21 gennaio 1921 e lì nacque il Partito comunista d’Italia che di lì a poco entrerà in clandestinità a causa della vittoria del fascismo. La lapide sulla facciata di quel che resta del Teatro San Marco fu affissa dai comunisti livornesi nel 1949 e reca questa scritta: “Tra queste mura il 21 gennaio 1921 nacque il Partito comunista italiano avanguardia della classe operaia. Alla testa della democrazia nella trentennale battaglia contro il fascismo popolò dei suoi migliori le carceri e i campi di guerra. Sorretto dalla ideologia di Marx di Engels di Lenin di Stalin dall’esempio di Gramsci sotto la guida di Togliatti prosegue la lotta per rompere le catene di un duro servaggio per la pace e l’indipendenza d’Italia nella realtà del socialismo. Fu distrutto durante i bombardamenti aerei della seconda guerra mondiale e definitivamente demolito nel dopoguerra; oggi rimangono solo i pochi resti della facciata principale e di alcuni muri perimetrali. Nel 1921, il Teatro San Marco ospitò il congresso costitutivo da cui sarebbe nato il Partito Comunista d'Italia, ma i partecipanti dovettero aprire l'ombrello anche all'interno della sala, a causa di notevoli infiltrazioni d'acqua piovana.
