A statue of Nazario Sauro, an irredentist executed by the Austro-Hungarian authorities in 1916, was erected in 1966 in front of the Trieste Maritime Station. The work is made of bronze, created by the Trieste sculptor Tristano Alberti on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the historic character who was also awarded the Gold Medal for Military Value in Memory. Sauro is also mentioned, along with Guglielmo Oberdan and Cesare Battisti, in the popular patriotic song "La leggenda del Piave".

Nowadays this story and many others like it may seem even surreal and incredible yet, for almost a century they have been the present, the reality and also the life and often the death of many people who with their commitment, their courage and also their sacrifice, have ensured that Italy was not, at least in important parts of its territory, under the domination of the foreigner. This statue represents Nazario Sauro as he was portrayed in a famous photograph of him and rightly hands down his memory as a hero, in the classic sense of the term, who knows how to put his ideals before his own life.
