★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nel 1615 la Confraternita di San Giacomo permise ai Padri mercenari scalzi di costruire un convento utilizzando alcuni locali annessi alla chiesa di San Giacomo. In tal modo la chiesa divenne la loro chiesa conventuale. Si vede il loro stemma sul portale del prospetto principale della chiesa.Il culto di San Giacomo fu introdotto in Sicilia dai Normanni nell'XI secolo. La leggenda racconta che il Conte Ruggero, sognò il Santo con la spada-croce che poi prenderà il nome di 'spada di San Giacomo'. Si edificò una chiesa e San Giacomo a Caltagiorone. In seguito viene tracciato il cammino delle sette chiese che si diramavano da Caltagirone, tra cui Agrigento, per i pellegrini diretti a Compostella e per i pellegrini diretti in Terrasanta. La chiesa sorge nel centro storico di Agrigento, nel quartiere oggi detto di San Giacomo, ma chiamato anticamente Terra Vecchia. Durante il periodo di Natale, spesso, i parrocchiani amano realizzare un Presepe di cioccolata.
In 1615 the Confraternity of San Giacomo allowed the barefoot mercenary Fathers to build a convent using some rooms annexed to the church of San Giacomo. Thus the church became their convent church. Their coat of arms can be seen on the portal of the main façade of the church.The cult of San Giacomo was introduced in Sicily by the Normans in the 11th century. The legend tells that Count Roger dreamed of the Saint with the sword-cross which then took the name of 'sword of San Giacomo'. A church and San Giacomo were built in Caltagiorone. Then the path of the seven churches that branched off from Caltagirone is traced, including Agrigento, for pilgrims heading to Compostella and for pilgrims heading to the Holy Land. The church stands in the historic center of Agrigento, in the district now known as San Giacomo, but formerly called Terra Vecchia. During the Christmas period, parishioners often love to make a chocolate nativity scene.
